Home-escape plans part of local fire-drill week

More than a dozen local fire departments plan to participate in the Great American Fire Drill this week to give residents a chance to review their home-escape plans and learn about fire safety. Families are invited to create and practice a home-fire-drill plan before the Thursday events.

A planning grid, available at www.firepreventionweek.org, may be used to draw a simple floor plan. Families are encouraged to label ways out of each room, choose a family-meeting place outside the home, go over the plan and practice.

Participants are asked to hold their personal drills at home before attending an open house to tell firefighters how their exercises went. Families also may bring in one old 9-volt battery from a smoke alarm to exchange for a new one.

The 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday open houses are scheduled for:
